Consider Paving With Asphalt

by Kathy Knight

When you are ready to pave your driveway you can either put down gravel, pavers, concrete, or asphalt. These are some of the most popular types of driveway, but if you have not given asphalt serious consideration, it is time to look at asphalt. Gravel is not a long term solution when it comes to a driveway but does serve as a very good base for the other three types of paving. Pavers can be extremely difficult to get to look correct. Concrete and asphalt are the two that are most used and have the most benefit. This article will outline why asphalt is such a good material for your paving project.

One of biggest reasons that a person should look at paving with asphalt is that it is incredibly durable. Asphalt is made from a limestone aggregate and an oil based material called bitumen. The two are mixed together to form a very viscous fluid and then laid down and steamrolled. The process causes the asphalt to be extremely flat and hard. The odds are you drive on asphalt roads everyday and do not think much of it. The fact is that if asphalt is durable enough to be used on roads then it is durable enough for your driveway.

In areas where there are a lot of freeze and thaw cycles through the year asphalt is extremely good to use. In the winter when materials get cold they shrink, but in the summer when materials heat up they expand. This constant flexing of materials can wear them down. However, the bitumen and elastic nature of asphalt allows it to flex without much of a problem. Asphalt actually does very well in these types of environments. If you live in an area that experiences seasons you should consider asphalt.

One of the biggest advantages of asphalt is that it can be repaired fairly easy. Over a long period of time the asphalt will start to crack and erode. However, at your local home improvement store you will find that you can buy polymer crack sealers that will effectively seal up the cracks in the asphalt. You will also be able to find buckets of asphalt patches to fill in any potholes. When the asphalt is really falling apart the entire slab can be resurfaced to prolong the life of the entire slab. This effectively creates a smooth surface and makes your asphalt last much longer.
