How To Change The Color Of Asphalt Pavement

by Kathy Knight

Most people don't even know that asphalt can be colored, but it can. There are a variety of earth tone shades that it can be colored in, and there are valid reasons why this is something you would want to do. You won't have to look at plain black asphalt anymore, and you can have aesthetically appealing and decorative asphalt for your driveway, pathway, or bike paths. The color additives used are easy to use and environmentally-friendly for both asphalt emulsion sealers and hot mix asphalt.

Top Reasons to Color Asphalt

Asphalt additives convert pitch black asphalt to a visible surface easily and economically. Visible asphalt is better than black asphalt because it enhances safety and differentiation.

With asphalt additives, you can turn a dull driveway to an attractive place with bright earth tone colors that will look good with the rest of the property. This is a good option for walkways, parking lots, bike paths, driveways, and roads.

Asphalt color additives do not contain any harmful chemicals. As a matter of fact, this option meets all the federal and EPA guidelines, making it environmentally friendly. In addition to that, these additives are very easy to use.

How to Correct Asphalt Color

If you already have an asphalt driveway or parking lot and want to correct the color, the best thing you can do is use colored asphalt sealcoating. There is a wide range of colored asphalt sealant options that you can use when you do asphalt repair. Of course, you need to be ready to pay a little more than you would for typical black asphalt, but the look and the durability will be worth it.

If your current asphalt driveway was previously sealed with a water-based sealant, you would not be able to use colored sealant because it will only be possible on fresh asphalt. Once you choose colored asphalt sealcoating, you can never revert to a water-based sealant. However, if at one point you want your driveway to look black again, colored sealants come in black as well so you can use that.

Doing asphalt repairing and correcting the color is something you may be able to do on your own, but if you are not a DIY person, you can have a professional contractor do it for you. The asphalt repairs will be well worth it for sprucing up your property.
